Comparing Hautes-Cotes de Beaune Bourgogne

... okay, so maybe it's a bit unfair to compare a 2008 and 2007 Bourgogne from two different regions. Yet when a favorite wine store clerk suggested I try the Domaine Michel Gros 2007 (around $30, but splurge, it's the holidays) and 2008 Domaine Rollin (mid-twenties?)I was game

Both were very good, yet perhaps the 2008 vintage was a bit better for this was my note:

2008 Domaine Rollin

color: medium garnet, fresh/young looking
nose: med+ intensity, assertive aroma of sharp red fruit, some spice
palate: dry, acid med+ itensity, tannin low, body med alc est 13, (12.5) finish is med+

style note: a more assertive, sharper, and fresher style of Pinot Noir with full flavored red cherries on the palate, a long racy finish, and youthful, exuberant balance though acidiy stands out a bit. Fruit is concentrated and there is enough complexity for its bourgogne level. May improve with bottle age for up to four years, good drinking right now with salmon, pork, or salads.

I gave it a 84 and noticed that Allen Meadows gave it a 84.

The 07 Domaine Michel Gros Hautes Cotes de Nuits

color: ruby, med intensity and transparency, wwm
nose: med intensity, slight spice, a sort of vague mint/herbal quality, very slight cinammon stick
palate: dry, acid med (only), tannin low, body med alc est 12.5, finish is med ...

Style note: A very well balanced village level cote de nuit with prudent spice, and much attention paid to the exact balance of acid, tannin, fruit, and almost inperceptable oak. A very good match for salmon and salads, as well as lighter and/or savory dishes.
